History of East St. Louis

Once a bustling city, East St. Louis has suffered a depressed economy in the past. Due to a lack of jobs and the industrial decline, the city lost 70 percent of its businesses and 55 percent of its population. Its inaction by the city government only compounded the problem. As businesses and residents migrated out of the city, the tax base declined. The city’s future depends on the development of new housing and businesses in the area.

During the past two decades, East St. Louis has undergone a plethora of changes. For one, it became an All-America City in 1959, despite the fact that it had fewer residents than St. Louis. In 1950, the city’s population topped eighty-two hundred people. During this period, the city’s music scene played an important role in the development of rock and roll, jazz, and blues. Many of its musicians, including Miles Davis, achieved national recognition. The city’s population was dwindling until the late 1990s, when it began redevelopment projects. In addition, it opened the Katherine Dunham Museum, which features a children’s workshop.
